12427, 12428, and 12429 are three 1/12 4WD Crawler RC Cars from Wltoys. In terms of appearance, 12427 and 12428 are exactly the same, while 12429 has a significantly different design. So how do they differ in detail? Many people question this question. So here, I simply answer the question.
Wltoys 12427 vs 12428
Launched in 2020, the 12427 is just an upgraded version of the 12428. It has some small improvements, such as the replacement of the plastic gear differential with a metal differential. Otherwise, the two are the exact same model, so you don’t have to worry about it. Wltoys 12428 is currently discontinued.
If you are interested in RC differentials, you can continue to read the bottom about RC differentials, including what is a differential, and a comparison of plastic differentials and metal differentials. These are helpful for your RC builds.
Wltoys 12427 vs 12429
Basic parameter comparison:
Vehicle | 12427(12428) | 12429 |
Scale | 1/12 | 1/12 |
Max. Speed | 50km/h | 40km/h |
Traction system | 4WD | 4WD |
Battery | 7.4V 1500mAh Li-ion | 7.4V 1500mAh Li-ion |
Size | 420*245*180mm | 385x260x205mm |
Weight | 2.6kg | 3.2 kg |
Motor | 540 Brushed | 540 Brushed |
Price | $143.6 | $96.5 |
The power system configuration of 12427 and 12429 is the same, and each has its own characteristics in appearance. However, the 12427 is smaller in weight and size, and outperforms the 12429 in all aspects of performance, such as climbing, jumping, accelerating, and so on. The only downside to the 12427 is the price, while the 12429 is a good budget option. In this video, you can see their subtle differences.
What is a differential?
The differential is the main component of the RC car’s drive system. Its function is to allow the wheels on both sides to rotate at different speeds while transmitting power to the wheels on both sides.
Why does each wheel need to turn at a different speed? When an RC vehicle is cornering or driving on a bumpy road, the turning radius of the inner wheel and the outer wheel is different. The differential makes the two wheels turn at different speeds, which ensures the vehicle run consistently.
Plastic Differential vs Metal Differential
With the long-term operation of the RC car, the gears of the differential will be subject to different degrees of wear, causing some undesirable symptoms: difficult steering and tire wear, and so on. Metal differentials are more durable, so compared to 12428, 12427 has a longer service life.
